The Conestoga is located near Ogdensburg, NY, just across the bridge in Cardinal, Ontario. An exceptional shore dive for intermediate to advanced divers depending on the current on that day. If you arrive and find the current too strong the Conestoga, nearby Kittyhawk, or more appropriately the WeeHawk offers diving especially suited for novice to intermediate divers.
The Conestoga was a combination passenger and package steam freighter launched on July 6, 1868 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was tied up just outside of Lock 28 with 40,000 bushels of wheat when she caught fire on May 22, 1922. Fortunately no lives were lost, much of the cargo was salvaged, but the boat was a total loss. She was towed out of the canal to her current resting place in 28 feet of water, just a few yards from shore with her bow into the current. Much of the superstructure has been destroyed by the fire and subsequent ice damage. Amazingly her enormous boilers still break the surface making her very easy to locate.
The Conestoga was 253’x 36’x16’3” wood construction covered by steel. She is wonderfully intact. The current can be moderate to swift. The stack that you see above the water is in the aft portion of the ship.
A nice way to do this dive is to enter the water well upstream of the stacks and drift along the bottom at 24-28 feet of water, keeping the bank in view to your left. The Conestoga will soon come into view. Decide prior to your dive with your buddy which side of the ship you will explore first. The current will carry you to the stern where you will find the prop creates an eddy where you can meet up with your dive buddy. When you have rested and finished inspecting the large propeller, proceed up over the transom to explore the deck of the boat all the way to the bow.
On the deck you will find plenty to look at. The stack that sticks out of the water and the associated double boilers. Again, please do your part to preserve the integrity of this living museum and leave all the artifacts in place for others to enjoy as you have.
